The Eikund Isbjørn Polar Bears, designed by Arne Tjomsland in 1955, are beautifully sculptural wooden figurines inspired by the distinctive form and character of the polar bear. This physical interpretation of the animal was recognised with a gold medal at the Deutsche Handwerksmesse in Munich, just two years after its original design.

The character of the Isbjørn comes entirely from its carefully considered form. The smooth, soft outline creates a playful yet remarkably lifelike appearance, giving the figurine an expressive quality despite its simplified, abstract silhouette.

Tjomsland drew inspiration from polar literature as well as time spent at the Zoological Museum in Oslo during his childhood. These influences are reflected in the figurine’s organic shape and carefully observed proportions.
