How to Wash Your Wool with Snow!

Hesitant to wash your wool blanket but miss when it felt fresh and new? We have a creative solution, sure to add new life to your wool products and keep them clean throughout the winter months. All you need is snow!

That’s right, a little bit of dry, powdery snow can go a long way in prolonging the freshness of your wool, this technique has been used in Nordic countries for centuries and is quick and easy to do!

Follow along for a step-by-step guide on snow-washing and let go of your fear of washing your treasured blankets and wool goods.

Step 1: Shake your blanket well to remove dust and dirt from its surface, then hang it outside over a railing or on a clothesline.

Step 2: Once acclimated to the outside temperature, Lay your blanket down in a bed of dry, powdery snow and cover it in a thin layer.

Step 3: Work the snow into the fabric gently, as if handwashing, you can use your hands for this, or get a broom and gently beat the snow into your blanket.

Step 4: Let your blanket rest for 15 - 20 minutes before flipping it over and repeating the process of covering, and washing on the other side.

Step 5: Shake your blanket well and hang it to dry for roughly 30 minutes while the snow evaporates.

And there you have it, the Nordic tradition of snow washing. This process will not only prolong the life of your wool, as it is far less harsh than a washing machine but will also cost no money and give the colour and appearance of your wool new life!
