Description
The Eikund Hunter Lounge Chair, designed by Torbjørn Afdal in 1960, is an iconic example of Norwegian mid-century design and a refined interpretation of the traditional Scandinavian hunting chair. Originally created during the 1950s–60s, hunting chairs were known for their relaxed proportions, visible craftsmanship, and use of natural materials. Eikund has brought Afdal’s design back into production while preserving its essential character.
Afdal graduated from the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in 1946 and spent his career at the legendary Tegnekontoret Bruksbo. His approach to the Hunter was deliberately minimalist, focusing on a fluid, organic wooden frame rather than the heavier construction often associated with traditional hunting chairs.
The chair's defining feature is its saddle leather seat and backrest, stretched around the wooden frame with adjustable belts. Double-layered leather, carefully matched edge stitching, and solid cast-brass buckles add refined details to the otherwise understated construction. The result is a design that Eikund describes through the idea of “simplicity”—a seemingly simple form achieved through highly considered craftsmanship.
Available with a choice of hardwood frames and saddle leather upholstery, the Hunter Lounge Chair develops a distinctive character over time. Its low, relaxed profile and natural materials make it equally suited to reading corners, living rooms, lounges, hospitality spaces, and contemporary interiors.
